Shortly after the prayer, Sambo told newsmen that they offered the special Juma’at prayer to Almighty Allah in appreciation of the general progress in the country.

“Alhamdulillah (thank God), we have just prayed for the country on our centenary celebration.

“We are now 100 years of amalgamation, of becoming the great country, Nigeria. We have prayed for Almighty Allah’s blessing.

“We have experienced within these 100 years the period of colonialism, the period of independence struggle, and the period of regional governance.

“At 100, we have reached the stage where we consider ourselves better as Nigerians, as one country, one people.

“We pray for Allah’s continued guidance and blessing for this country to have peace and development.’’

He described the nation’s centenary as “highly significant” to all Nigerians, and prayed for the rapid transformation of the country.

Earlier in his sermon, the Deputy Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Abuja, Sheik Muhammed Kabiru, urged Nigerians to remain grateful to Almighty Allah for ensuring the unity of the country in the past 100 years.

On the challenges facing the country, Kabiru said God was in control of the situation.

He, therefore, called on Nigerians to continue to pray for the peaceful co-existence of the nation. (NAN)
