Labour backs Kaduna health workers strike, cholera hits LGs



The Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress on Friday threw its weight behind the industrial action embarked upon by health  workers in the state.



The health workers strike, which commenced on March 1, 2014 has grounded activities in hospitals and other health facilities across the state, forcing families to evacuate their sick folks to private clinics in the state.



Meanwhile, acute diarrhea and vomiting  had hit five  local governments areas in the state, leaving the victims without medical attention as a result of the health workers’ strike.



The development has forced the NLC in the state to call on the state government to urgently address the demands of the striking health workers so that they could go back to work in the interest of the people.



Chairman  of the NLC, Kaduna  State council,  Adamu Ango, who spoke to journalists on Friday in Kaduna, appealed to Governor Mukhtar Yero to honour the agreement of the state with the health workers on August 14, 2011.



“There was an agreement  between the  Kaduna State Government  and  Joint Health Sector Association and Union  over the  implementation of 30 per cent CONHESS Balance Health workers but up till now, the  state government has refused to honour the signed  agreement  between  the two parties,” he said.



Areas hit by the acute diarrhea and vomiting  are Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Sabon  Gari,  Zaria  and Igabi Local Government Areas.



Mallam  Hamza Ikara, an official  of the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Agency, said  the agency was fully aware of the outbreak and investigation was going on.



 “This morning, we went round to see the situation and we found out   there were serious cases in Government  Girls Secondary School, Kawo,  where about  16 students  have been affected and right now, they are in a private hospital  receiving treatment,” he said.


He identified unhygienic environment and lack of  good portable drinking water as being responsible for outbreak,  calling on the people  in the  state to be conscious of their health.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Benue, Alhaji Baba Yusuf, told journalists on Tuesday that the issuance of the cards would be between May 23 to May 25 while the continuous voters’ registration would hold between May 28 and June 1. He said the commencement of the two exercises were a prelude to the 2015 general elections.
