Monarch advocates one year military training for youths

The Amayanabo of Twon-Brass in Bayelsa State, Alfred Spiff, has advocated a one year military service for youths in Nigeria.

He spoke at the plenary session of the National Conference 2014 in Abuja on Thursday.

He said, “We should reach out to all youths as soon as they are 18, they should do one year compulsory military service.

“The youth, who have been privileged to go to through university and are ready to be deployed, you now give then another one year jamboree going round the country that you are doing unity. Instead, we should reach out to other youths. That is the problem.

The monarch said the military should not be singled out for blame because civilians joined them in running the government during the military rule.

Besides, he argued that civilians wrote the military constitution that they operated with.

Spiff, who became a Military Administrator of Rivers State at the age of 24, is best remembered as ordering that a journalist’s be shaved with broken bottle for writing a story on teachers strike in the state.

He asked for the restoration of roles of traditional rulers in the constitution.

He also appealed to Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of “live and let live.”

The monarch added, “Let us learn to give and take. As brothers and sisters we should tolerate one another and live as one family.”

A delegate representing the North Central, Mr. John Dara, said Nigerians must shun personal and parochial interest that would not serve the common good.
