Soldiers destroy militants’ camps in Benue -Military



Troops of the Nigerian Army have carried out raids in three local government areas of Benue State where militias have carried out series of attacks in recent times, leading to the death of hundreds in several villages.



The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, said in a statement on Thursday that the troops had restored normalcy in Guma, Gwer West and Agatu Local Government Areas of the state where some of the clashes between Fulani herdsmen and Benue communities were recorded.



Olukolade said the troops cleared all the militants’ camps in the three local government areas.



He said the ongoing operation, tagged ‘Operation Restore Peace’, was designed to address the worsening security situation in parts of the North Central.



The Defence spokesman said the military also made some arrests and recoveries though the statement was silent on the details.



He said militant camps were also destroyed with arrests made at Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State.



According to him, two AK 47 rifles were recovered from the insurgents during an encounter at Shimanker, Plateau State.



He said, “Formation commanders of the Nigerian Army have moved to the various states in their areas of responsibility to conduct the operations aimed at addressing deteriorating security situation in parts of the North Central.



“Troops deployed in Benue State have already cleared camps of all armed gangs in three local governments of the state.



“Normalcy has been restored in Guma, Gwer West and Agatu local government areas.



“Some arrests and recoveries have been made in the process.”
