Confab: Delegate wants secret ballot system

A delegate to the ongoing National Conference, Chief Chris Eluemunoh, has advised the secretariat to adopt the secret ballot system during voting at the floor of the conference.

Eluemunoh, who is representing the South East Geo-Political Zone, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday that the system “is the most acceptable voting pattern the world over.”

He advised the secretariat to resist the temptation of adopting the open ballot system, saying it was undemocratic and could disrupt the conference.

“I want to call on the secretariat to desist from introducing any system that will disrupt the conference.

“There is nowhere in the world that open ballot system is allowed as against secret ballot system.

“The secret ballot system will involve using voting papers, with which delegates will write their opinions and put in the box to be counted to determine the result of the vote.

“Any attempt to adopt open ballot system as a pattern of voting at plenary will be strongly resisted because it is undemocratic, intimidating and outdated,” he said.

NAN reports that the National Conference will resume plenary on May 19 after three weeks of rigorous work at committees’ level.
