NAS to celebrate Soyinka at 80

The National Association of Seadogs has unveiled a number of
activities aimed at celebrating the 80th birthday of Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka on July 13, 2014.

In a recent meeting with journalists in Lagos, the association said it has decided to adopted an online approach to the celebrations with the launch of the Soyinka Annual Lecture Series Website and Digital Discourse on pressing national issues.

Also, an online comic strip featuring the creative works of seasoned painter, Olu Ajayi and other artists is in the offing. Titled ‘Adventures of Captain Blud’, it serve as an interface between Soyinka and the younger generation.

This year’s NAS Annual Commemorative lecture titled ‘This House must not Fall-Renegotiating Nigeria’s Social Contract for 100 years of Nationhood’ will take place at the Cultural Centre, Abeokuta on July 11 with the Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, and Dr. Oby Ezekwesili as guest speakers.

International President of NAS, Mr Ide Owodiong-Idemeko, said the annual event was inspired by the Laureate’s visibility and charismatic leadership. He said the Digital Dialogue series, which will be mounted on the new website, would specifically cater for aggregating public opinion and sentiment towards critical issues of national importance by facilitating online dialogue among citizens, and publicising them to the necessary stakeholders in order to drive change.

The NAS president said the Wole Soyinka Award for Humanistic Ideals, which attracts a cash prize of $6,000, would be awarded to exceptional individuals or corporate organisations, irrespective of location, provided they fulfilled the pre-set criteria for qualification.

“The undertaken action or activity must be verifiable, sustainable and have brought about measurable improvement to the safety and welfare condition of a reasonable percentage of the population. The impact of the activity or action on social harmony and peaceful coexistence will also be taken into account,” he said.

Also coinciding with Soyinka’s birthday is NAS’ annual free medical mission that has morphed into a quarterly intervention since it commenced in 1952. To this end, the medical humanitarian initiative tagged the NAS Free Medical Mission, will have four missions in various towns across the country. Prospective beneficiaries of the association’s free medical services will join over 3,000 previous ones as the association aims to make contact with as many people as possible.

The medical missions will hold in 2014 in Uselu (Edo State) in May, and Isara (Ogun State) in July to coincide with the celebration of Professor Wole Soyinka’s 80th birthday. Other sites for the mission are Ebonyi State in August and an unconfirmed location in November, which will be decided at the NAS Annual General in August.
