Salva Kiir In Face-Face With Former VP To End S/Sudan Violence

President Salva Kiir of South Sudan and former Vice President, Reik Machar, are to meet face-to-face in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Friday in an effort to end the country’s five months violence.

The IGAD Special Envoys to the South Sudan Mediation Process announced on Wednesday in Addis Ababa that “Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan (RSS) and Dr Riek Machar, Former Vice President of the RSS, are set to meet in Addis Ababa on May 9.

The envoys said the meeting was being convened by Hailemariam Dessalegn, Prime Minister of Ethiopia and current Chairperson of the IGAD Assembly.

The Special Envoys expect that the meeting would lead to end the violence and killings in South Sudan and provide the necessary impetus to the ongoing IGAD-led Mediation Process toward an inclusive and lasting political solution to the crisis.

The Special Envoys, in a statement, noted the developments as the parties had on Monday agreed to begin tackling substantive issues that address the root causes of the crisis.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that two parties in the conflict had on Monday signed a month-long ceasefire agreement to allow access to humanitarian service providers to attain to the hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons.

The latest agreement includes the full adherence to the implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement and Permanent Ceasefire signed on Dec. 23, Transitional Governance, Interim Arrangements and a Permanent Constitution.

The two parties had on Monday May 5 signed a “Recommitment on Humanitarian Matters in the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement between the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and SPLM/A (in Opposition) in Addis Ababa.

“The agreement includes a commitment to observe 30 ‘days of tranquility’ starting from May 7 in order to preposition humanitarian supplies and enable the people of South Sudan to plant their food crops, care for their livestock and move to areas of safety.’’

The two parties had further committed to open all humanitarian corridors within South Sudan (via river, roads, rail and air) and from the neighboring countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda).

The IGAD special envoys expressed continuous commitment to end the crises with the support of the international community and friends of South Sudan.

The Amb. Seyoum Mesfin-led IGAD Special Envoys called on the parties to build on the current momentum in moving the peace process forward toward a speedy end to the conflict.

It would be recalled that violence broke in the capital of the newest African country on Dec. 15, 2013, following an alleged unconstitutional change of government by former Vice President Reik Machar-led SPLM/A in opposition.

The violence between the two factions led to the death of more than 300,000 persons and some one million others displaced fleeing to neighbouring countries of Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya. (NAN)
