2014 Hajj: Max Air To Airlift 52, 000 Pilgrims

Max Air is set to airlift 52 thousand pilgrims to this year annual muslims pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, investigation has shown.

Max Air is one of the three major carriers expected to airlift about 76,000 pilgrims from 12 airports nationwide. The others are Kabo and Medview airlines. The inaugural outbound flight is scheduled for the last week of August.

Max Air, a relatively new player in the aviation sector is relying on its five Boeing 747 aircraft to achieve the feat of airlifting more than half of the intending pilgrims.

Further investigations however, show that the feat if allowed,is in violation of the Tender advertised by the National Hajj Commission(NAHCON) early in the year.

Among others, the Commission through the Tender provided that no carrier should airlift more than 40,000 pilgrims from six designated airports nationwide.

12 airports have been isolated for this year’s exercise. Among them are Kano, Lagos, Minna, Kaduna and Yola.

Other provisions to qualify prospective carriers as listed in the tender were Air Operators Certificate(AOC),evidence of registration or incorporation and evidence of non-indebtedness.

Our checks reveal that Meridian Airlines was knocked off for lacking AOC.

Further checks revealed that Max Air was the first choice of several States Pilgrims Welfare Boards leading to the violation of the 40,000 maximum mark.

Max Air spokesman Ibrahim Dahiru on Sunday reiterated the airline’s capacity to complete its task on time despite the large number of pilgrims allocated to it.

“I assure you that we have the capacity and competence to accomplish the task.We are the only airline with a fleet of 5 Boeing 747s. We can airlift 15,000 pilgrims in 3 weeks,” he told our reporter by telephone on Sunday.

Attempts to get NAHCON spokesman, Uba Mana was abortive as his telephone was switched off.

Sources close to one of the Commissioners, however, refuted the assertion that Max Air got the lion’s share of the airlift exercise in violation of the provision.

“This is not true.It not even public who will lift what number of pilgrims.Where did you get this information? NAHCON will not subvert its own provision,” he angrily stated.
