LASU students want Governing Council to slash fees by 60 per cent

Students of Lagos State University on Tuesday urged the institution’s Governing Council to apply  the approved 60 per cent reduction in fees only in tuition fees across board.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Lagos State Government had on June 11 announced a reduction of between 34 per cent and 60 per cent as tuition fees in the institution.

Gov. Babatunde Fashola had decided to reduce the fees as a result of several protests by the students and civil society groups.

The government had in 2011 increased the fees from N25, 000 to N198, 000 for humanities and education, while medical students paid N350, 000.

The students’ union had earlier rejected the offer of 34 and 60 per cent reduction, urging the state government to give the details in monetary terms.

Mr Nurudeen Yusuf, the Students’ Union President, told NAN that the union was discussing with the Governing Council on the fees reduction.

“It would be fair if the Governing Council works with the 60 per cent across board, rather than the 34 per cent,’’ he said.

Nurudeen said the students were not satisfied with the 34 per cent reduction because students paying N198, 000 would still pay about N131, 000.

“The fees will be affordable if the reduction is done at 60 per cent, and it would do the students a lot of good.”

He said students were resolute on their demand for more reduction in the fees, adding “we will not pay the 2013/2014 academic session fees until the demand is met.’’ (NAN)
