500,000 children to be enrolled in early childhood education in Zamfara 2015
(GUSAU)
The Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), said it would enroll 500,000 under the Early Child Care Development Education (ECCDE) programme by 2015.
The Chairman of the Board, Alhaji Murtala Jangebe, stated this on Wednesday in Gusau.
He was speaking at an advocacy meeting on child education in the state with Education Secretaries, traditional rulers and ECCDE Desk Officers.
Jangebe said the meeting was aimed at sensitising the participants on how to implement the programme which was introduced by the Federal Government.
He said that the programme made enrolment compulsory for children between three and five years before their enrolment into primary schools.
Jangebe, who was represented by the Board’s Director Planning, Research and Statistics, Alhaji Sani Mailafiya, said the board was highly committed in ensuring “our children’s readiness to be enrolled in primary education”.
According to him, the state has a total of 1,558 public primary schools out of which 251 offered early childhood education while 99 private primary schools out of 178 offered the programme.
“Based on our last school census, out of 436,580 children, only 24,803 were enrolled into the programme.
“We need to improve our efforts so that by next enrollment we will capture ap to 500,000 children across the state,” he said.
He called on the Education Secretaries, ECCDE desk officers and traditional rulers to synergise to ensure the success of the programme.
