The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has said the incessant vandalisation of petroleum pipelines and other critical infrastructure across the country is costing the nation several billions of naira that, if channeled otherwise, would impact positively on the national economy.
The Corps, in line with its mandate of fighting oil theft, oil bunkering and vandalism of public infrastructure, said it had resumed fresh partnership with major stakeholders to enable it win the war against the crimes.
The Corps’ Commandant General, Prof. Ade Abolurin, explained that the menace of pipeline and power infrastructure vandalism was taking an increasing toll on the nation’s revenue and said, as a lead agency in the protection of critical infrastructure and national assets , it must be supported by sister agencies to win the war.
He vowed that the Corps under his administration will not relent in mobilizing to areas affected.
“Although these vandals attack our prsonnel who are usually on hand to monitor and effect repairs on vandalised government assets, I make to say here that this trend of attacks will not deter us from carrying out our mandate,” he said.
This is even as he expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation and synergy between the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the Nigerian Navy, Armed Forces and the DSS whom, he said, had continued to show unalloyed resolve to eradicate vandalism and bunkering from the country.
“Of recent, the JTF arrested some vandals and handed them over to the Corps for further investigation and prosecution. Likewise, the Nigerian Navy in Delta and Bayelsa states respectively arrested oil thieves and handed same to us,” he said.
