Open Source Flaw ‘Devil’s Ivy’ Puts Millions of IoT Devices at Risk | Software

Image
Millions of IoT devices are vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks due to a vulnerability initially discovered in remote security cameras, Senrio reported this week. The firm found the flaw in a security camera developed by Axis Communications, one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of the devices. The Model 3004 security camera is used for security at the Los Angeles International Airport and other places, according to Senrio. The problem turned out to be a stack buffer overflow vulnerability, which the firm dubbed “Devil’s Ivy.” Axis notified the security firm that 249 different models of the camera were affected by the vulnerability. It found only three models that were unaffected. Buried Deep The problem lies deep in the communication layer of gSOAP , an open source third-party toolkit that is used by all kinds of device makers for IoT technology, according to Senrio. gSOAP manager Genivia reported that the toolkit has been downloaded more than 1 million times, according

Cortana Makes Smart Thermostat a Glas Act | Emerging Tech

Image
Microsoft and Johnson Controls this week unveiled Glas, a smart thermostat that runs on Microsoft’s Windows 10 IoT Core, a special operating system designed specifically for smaller devices. Glas also utilizes Microsoft’s smart voice assistant Cortana and its Azure Cloud to help users save energy while monitoring air quality in the home. Heating and cooling of a residential home accounts for around 48 percent of energy use, making it the largest energy expense for most families, noted Johnson Controls, a provider of HVAC, fire and security systems, and maker of the first electric room thermostat. In commercial buildings, heating and cooling accounts for approximately 40 percent of energy costs. With Microsoft’s Cortana voice services built-in, Glas could become a core part of a smart home play. More Than Temperature Control Thermostats that can be controlled remotely via a smartphone or other device generally have been increasing in popularity, but a key plus for Glas is that i

The 5 Technologies We Need to Change the World | Tech Buzz

I just finished reading an interesting hard science fiction book called The Punch Escrow , by Tal M. Klein (a movie is in the works). What makes the difference between hard and soft science fiction is that hard science fiction is based on science, while soft is, let’s just say, far more imaginative. To be honest, I enjoy both types, and the soft stuff is a ton easier to write. Those pesky physical rules don’t get in the way, and you don’t have to do research. The story takes place several decades in the future, and it revolves around the idea of quantum foam and teleportation. It points out why teleportation never may be practical, but it brings up the idea of human 3D printing, which could be used more effectively for space exploration. However, it also would have a massive number of other uses, both good and bad, which got me thinking about what else could change our future in a massive way. I came up with a list of five potentially world-changing technologies. I’ll close with

Microsoft Adds AI to HoloLens Silicon | Chips

Image
By John P. Mello Jr. Jul 25, 2017 10:22 AM PT The next version of Microsoft’s HoloLens may be better at navigating reality than the current version of the mixed-reality headset, thanks to a new coprocessor the company announced Sunday. The second version of HoloLens’ custom multiprocessor — called a “holographic processing unit,” or HPU — will incorporate artificial intelligence technology, Harry Shum, executive vice president of the Artificial Intelligence and Research Group, said at the annual CVPR computer vision event. The new HPU will enable HoloLens to do the kind of deep learning processing that typically is done only in the cloud. HoloLens is designed to be a self-contained holographic computer — battery, sensors and display are contained in the headset. The HPU allows the headset to negotiate reality without experience-killing latency. “Once you get the pattern algorithms straightened out, you want to run them locally because users can’t deal with any information lag,

Microsoft Releases Long-Awaited Security Tool, Sets Linux Preview | Developers

Image
Microsoft has released its long-awaited cloud-based bug detection tool, previously code-named “Project Springfield.” The Windows version became generally available, and a new Linux version became available as a preview last week. The tool, Microsoft Security Risk Detection, uses artificial intelligence to hunt down security vulnerabilities in software that is about to be released. Microsoft Security Risk Detection will help developers do fuzz testing, said David Molnar, the Microsoft researcher in charge of the group that developed the tool. Fuzz testing normally is done using outside consultants to test new software. Its purpose is to make sure vulnerabilities can be weeded out before the product goes into wide release to avoid the necessity of patching them on the back end. The service uses artificial intelligence to ask particular “what if” questions about new software, focusing on critical areas that might be vulnerable to attack by bad actors. Who’s Right About AI? Musk’s Dire Warnings Meet Zuckerberg’s Cheerful Optimism | Emerging Tech

Image
Two of Silicon Valley’s most influential visionaries, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, this week engaged in a public spat over the future of artificial intelligence and whether the government should take the wheel to counter the threat this emerging technology might pose to mankind. Musk, a longtime advocate of AI, has expressed serious concerns over the years about the potential for the technology to accelerate faster than society can learn to manage its growth. He has raised fears that intelligent machines could pose a risk to civilization if not properly regulated. Robot Apocalypse? “I keep sounding the alarm bell, but until people see robots going down the street killing people, they don’t know how to react, because it seems so ethereal,” Musk told attendees at the National Governors Association meeting last week. Zuckerberg, who decided to split his time between chatting on Facebook Live and overseeing a backyard cookout on Sunday, responded to a question

Flash Flames Out – but It Will Smolder for a While | Web Apps

Image
Adobe on Tuesday announced its decision to pull the plug on its much maligned Flash format, citing the growing use of HTML5, WebGL and Web Assembly open standards. Helper apps have evolved over time to become plugins, which then further evolved to become open Web standards, Adobe noted. However, because gaming, education and video have come to depend heavily on Flash over the years, its phaseout will be gradual. The company will continue to update it with any necessary patches, maintain browser and operating system compatibility, and add features as necessary until 2020. Adobe is working with partners Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Mozilla and Apple to smooth the transition. Each of those companies posted an update on how the shift will impact its browsers or interfaces. Partner Plans Eighty percent of desktop Chrome users accessed a page running Flash just three years ago, but that figure has declined to 17 percent currently, according to Google. SparkyLinux 5: Great All-Purpose Distro for Confident Linux Users | Reviews

Image
When I first reviewed the Game Over edition of SparkyLinux several years ago, I called it one of the best full-service Linux distros catering to game players you could find. That assessment extends to last month’s release of the non-gaming edition of this distro. The latest edition of SparkyLinux, version 5.0 “Nibiru,” finds its true calling as a Linux distro that falls between those that are beginner-friendly and those that require some amount of Linux knowledge. You can get a variety of editions with different desktop offerings, such as E19, LXDE and Openbox, from versions 4.5, 4.6 and 5.0. However, the best option now is the collection of upgraded features in the latest release. SparkyLinux 5.0 is based on the testing branch of Debian. It features customized lightweight desktops that include LXDE, Enlightenment, JWM, KDE, LXQt, Openbox, MATE and Xfce. It comes with multimedia plugins, a selected sets of apps, and its own custom tools to ease different tasks. Regardless of w

Amazon’s Secret 1492 Health Team Sets Sail | Tech Buzz

Image
A secret Amazon team, dubbed “1492,” has been working on a skunkworks project devoted entirely to healthcare, CNBC reported Thursday. The unit has been developing hardware devices and software applications related to electronic medical records, telemedicine and other health-related issues. The “1492” moniker refers to the year that Christopher Columbus made his voyage to the Americas, but perhaps the Amazon team missed the irony that Columbus actually did not realize he had “discovered” a new continent and thought he was somewhere else. Nonetheless, it’s clear that Amazon’s aim is to cover the bases in the healthcare arena, likely a bid to cash in on the sector’s massive profit potential. The greater U.S. healthcare market experienced double digital growth from 2000 to 2011, with an increase in U.S. revenue from US$1.2 trillion to $2.3 trillion, according to the Centers for Disease Control. That figure likely will grow at an increasing rate as healthcare costs in America continue t

Breaking: Arewa Youths back out, to withdraw quit notice order to Ndigbo

The Arewa Youths Coalition has said it would withdraw the quit order it gave to Ndigbo to vacate all northern states before October 1 st . The northern group’s spokesperson, Abdulaziz Suleiman, said they would withdraw the statement this week. The group waved the olive branch to Ndigbo after it had a meeting with the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Sunday. Governor shettima who confirmed the development however warned that the Arewa Youths group should not be criminalized as such would be counter-productive. Moreover, according to Suleiman, “What we can say is that there has been a major development. Now the chairman of the Governors’ Forum has taken the initiative and invited us to start negotiations. This is the first time we are meeting publicly with any leader and we believe that it is a major step forward in our ongoing consultations. “We hold the governor in high esteem and we have the unity of the country at heart”. “You see, I wonder why you talk about

Va. Mom Allegedly Said She Killed Daughter to Save Her From Alients

Image
A 27-year-old Virginia mother accused of fatally shooting her 6-year-old daughter last February allegedly told investigators she wanted to send the girl to heaven to spare her from aliens, PEOPLE confirms. Court documents filed last week by her attorney further allege Darla Hise told officials at a psychiatric hospital that she had aliens inside her stomach she wanted removed. PEOPLE obtained a copy of the motion, which seeks to keep Hise’s alleged confessions to authorities from being presented as evidence during her impending trial, scheduled for late August. On Feb. 6, Hise called 911 several times but allegedly refused to provide her name and address, saying only that she thought her daughter Abigail had been shot. Police traced the call and officers were dispatched to Hise’s Hot Springs home, after which deputies found Abigail dead from a single gunshot wound. Hise was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, two counts of use of a firearm, possession of

The Elusive Total Linux Convergence Dream | Tech Blog

Regular readers know that I usually stick to the well-charted territory of essential terminal commands and practical overviews of Linux history, since they are immediately useful to newcomers. Thankfully for beginners, the basics don’t change very quickly — but that’s not to say that Linux is a stagnant ecosystem. Far from it. Linux can be found at the very frontier of emerging computer trends. Most current events in the Linux community have little direct impact on the average desktop user, but one recent development that very much does is Canonical’s decision to end development of Ubuntu’s flagship Unity desktop. This was disheartening news for Unity fans this spring, but over the past few months it has been the subject of intense discussion throughout Linux developer and user circles for what it portends for the community at large. Linux Pioneers When the Linux kernel was unveiled to the world in the early 90s, there was a rush to devise and release new projects based on it. Wi

Why Facebook’s Willow Beats Apple’s Saucer | Tech Buzz

Image
Facebook knocked it out of the park with its financials last week, and a lot of its success comes from Zuckerberg’s unique focus. Unlike other firms that jump from project to project, ranging widely from what makes them money — like Google — Facebook stays close to what made it successful. There is no stronger evidence than when you compare the two office projects from Apple and Facebook. The huge Apple Flying Saucer (sadly, it doesn’t fly) is nearing completion. Facebook recently announced it too was building a new showcase site, called “Willow ,” but Facebook was building the first arcology at scale. This will give Facebook some bragging rights. While its new campus might not be as advanced-looking as Apple’s, it will be more socially, environmentally and organizationally attuned. millennials really like two of those three concepts a lot, suggesting Facebook will be more attractive to the best and brightest, and that its site will be more advanced where it counts. I’ll explai
