Guinness World Records Day 2008 – Edd China Drives The Fastest Bed

Hello and Happy Guinness World Records Day! I’m Craig Glenday, Editor in Chief of the Guinness World Records book, and just for today your Guest Editor here on YouTube.

Today is the international day of record-breaking, and the videos I’ve highlighted today all embody the spirit of determination and dedication required to earn yourself Guinness World Records certification. This selection is, I truly believe, a realistic snapshot of the world we live in today. The news is full of doom and gloom, and rarely paints a true, balanced picture of the world we live in. The truth is that humanity is full of optimistic, fun-loving, determined people, and Guinness World Records is here to celebrate the fantastic diversity of people and their achievements.

So, theres no better time to dust off the sweatbands and try your hand at record-breaking and the wide spectrum of topics seen in today’s video selection confirms that you don’t need to be an Olympic-grade athlete or a Noble-Prize-winning scientist. Literally anyone can have a go. So whats stopping you?

Mark Beaumont

First off the starting block is Mark Beaumont like me, a fellow Scotsman; unlike me, he did the seemingly impossible: cycling around the world in a record 194 days and 17 hours! Mark cycled a distance of 29,445.81 km (18,296.74 miles) and travelled over 40,100 km in total (including transfers). The journey started and finished at Paris (France) from 5 August 2007 to 15 February 2008 and covered Europe, Pakistan, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Guinness World Records is proud to partner with Pants for Poverty during this years GWR Day this fantastic organization encourages you to trade your old pants for a new Fair Trade pair. This way, tribal Indian cotton farmers get a fair price for their products and you get pants without the guilt of child-slavery. This video shows a previous Pants for Poverty campaign in which old pants were destroyed in liquid nitrogen!

I had the pleasure of adjudicating Victors records myself here we are in Sweden at a department store last year attempting not one but three reecords. The things that Victor can do with a football are mesmerising. Hes a real showman with the Latin passion typical of Argentinean footballers! – and as youll see, he can captivate a crowd with his ball control skills.

For me, Michael Phelps the Baltimore Bullet was one of the highlights of this years Olympics in Beijing. Here he is breaking the 200-m butterfly in March 2007 in Melbourne, Australia, one of the records he went on to smash again in Beijing. Indeed, it was at this years Games that he broke the record for the most golds won at a single Olympics, taking an unprecedented total of eight. He may not be the most graceful man on land, but once he hits the water, he assumes the agility and lissomness of a dolphin.

If you dont have the physique of Michael Phelps or the stamina of Mark Beaumont, you can still set a speed record. Hey, you often dont even need to leave your sofa to be a record breaker, as this clip proves! Once again, I was honored to be on hand to adjudicate at the moment when Marek Turowski snuggled down into a sofa built by TV mechanic Edd China and broke Edds world record by hitting 92 mph!

Heres proof that anyone can try to get their name in the Guinness World Records book. Its free to apply all we ask is that you visit our website first and tell us about your record BEFORE you attempt it! Usain Bolts 100-m final

Another fantastic Olympic achievement this year saw Jamaicas Usain Lightning Bolt pulling off what many people thought was impossible running the 100-m dash in under 9.7 seconds. Words like awesome get thrown around a lot these days, but this is the kind of accomplishment that justifies the term. This year also saw Bolt cement his title as the worlds fastest man by winning the 200-m the event considered the ultimate in running in a time of 19.30 seconds!

OK, so heres a record almost anyone can although it will take a certain type of glutton to beat the current Guinness World Record! (And I suspect that if you try this record too often, theres no way youll ever beat Usain Bolts 100-m record!)

Donna Karan Apologizes (Again) After Defending Harvey Weinstein

Designer Donna Karan says she didn’t know the extent of the accusations against Harvey Weinstein before she spoke out to defend the disgraced movie mogul. “I heard a whisper, but there were whispers all over,” Karan, 69, said of the sexual misconduct allegations during an interview with ABC News which aired Monday on Good Morning America . “It wasn’t until a day and a half after the I truly heard about it.” She added: “That’s my honest truth. I didn’t know.” The fashion industry vet sparked outrage earlier this month after calling Weinstein a “wonderful” person in a  Daily Mail  interview and suggesting women may be “asking for it” by dressing provocatively. She backtracked days later, issuing an apology and declaring that her statements did “not represent my actual views.” She apologized again in the recent interview, declaring, “I made a huge, huge mistake.” She admitted, “what I said is so wrong and not who I am.” “I was exhausted. I had just come from a 14-hour plane trip,”

Latest blog entries - Eloti tV INEC to issue permanent voter cards in 10 states The National Independent Electoral Commission says it will commence the issuance of the permanent voter cards in 10 states of the federation. The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Benue, Alhaji Baba Yusuf, told journalists on Tuesday that the issuance of the cards would be between May 23 to May 25 while the continuous voters’ registration would hold between May 28 and June 1. He said the commencement of the two exercises were a prelude to the 2015 general elections. Yusuf explained those eligible to register in the CVR included those who were not up to 18 years as at 2011 and those who were unable to register during the last exercise. “Those who had problems with the direct data capture machines and were not captured during the 2011 registration exercise as well as those who could not register in 2011 for one reason or the other can also register this year,” he said.
