Calif. Man Allegedly Had Skull in Trunk

A California man stopped last week for allegedly running a stop sign was arrested after officers allegedly found a human skull in his vehicle and he refused to answer questions about it.

A statement from the Angels Camp Police Department alleges Joshua Davis, 41, would not identify himself after his car was pulled over the night of Nov. 22.

According to the statement, Davis was in the front passenger seat when the car was stopped, with another person in the driver’s seat.

But the arresting officer said he had observed Davis “driving the vehicle earlier” that evening.

Police eventually learned his name and that his license had been suspended.

Inside his vehicle, police allegedly discovered “a recently unearthed human skull in a bag in the trunk of the vehicle, as well as methamphetamine concealed behind the fuel door of the vehicle,” the statement explains.

The statement further alleges that “Davis invoked his Miranda rights and refused to explain how he came to be in possession of the human skull.”

Davis has been charged with disturbing or removing human remains, possession of methamphetamine, driving with a suspended license, and violating the terms of his probation.

Investigators are working to determine the identity of the skull and where it came from.

The statement does not identify the car’s driver.

It was unclear Tuesday if Davis has entered pleas to the charges against him.

PEOPLE was unable to determine if he has hired a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
